NinjaTraderFrom plan to filled brackets, inside NinjaTrader

Plan the trade on your NinjaTrader chart, then execute it with one click. Edge Trader Tools does the same math as this calculator, then places the order: stop and targets attach the moment you fill, so there's no window where the position is unprotected.

  • Live sizing as you drag

Drag entry, stop and target lines. Contracts, dollar risk and R:R update as you move them.

  • One-click execute with brackets

Sends a limit, stop or market order with your stop and up to 3 take profits attached as OCO.

  • Manages the trade for you

Auto breakeven, trailing stop, close half or 1 contract, and a half-risk button.

  • Built for prop accounts

Cust% risks a percent of the balance you enter, like your drawdown, with a max-contracts cap.

How futures position size is calculated

Decide how much you are willing to lose, measure your stop in ticks, and divide. The calculator rounds down so you never risk more than your budget.

risk $ = account × risk %
risk/contract = stop ticks × tick value + round-trip commission
contracts = floor(risk $ ÷ risk/contract)

Worked example: ES, 1% of $50,000

  1. Risk budget: $50,000 × 1% = $500
  2. 10-point stop on ES = 40 ticks × $12.50 = $500 per contract
  3. $500 ÷ $500 = 1 ES, 10 MES, or 100 NES

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a futures contract calculator?

A futures contract calculator turns a risk budget and a stop distance into a whole number of contracts. It uses each contract's tick size and tick value, and it rounds down so the trade does not exceed the budget.

Is this a lot size or contract size calculator too?

Yes. Position size, lot size, and contract size all mean the number of futures contracts. This calculator computes that count from the risk and the stop.

What is a tick size and tick value?

Tick size is the minimum price movement. Tick value is the money that one tick is worth. Both are set by the exchange and differ by contract.

How is point value calculated for different futures contracts?

Point value is tick value divided by tick size. E-mini S&P 500 (ES) has a tick value of $12.50 and a tick size of 0.25, so the point value is $50. Bitcoin futures (BTC) have a tick size of 5 and a tick value of $25, so the point value is $5. Micro Bitcoin (MBT) has a tick value of $0.50 and a tick size of 5, so the point value is $0.10. The same identity is applied to every contract.

How do I determine my stop loss points?

Enter the stop as points, as ticks, or as an entry price and a stop price. In price mode the distance is the absolute difference between those two prices. The calculator does not choose the stop for you.

What is the difference between fixed amount and percentage risk?

Fixed amount risk is a dollar budget. Percentage risk is the account size multiplied by the percent. A $50,000 account at 1% is a $500 budget. The contract count is that budget divided by the risk of one contract, rounded down.

How do micro futures contracts differ from standard futures contracts?

Micros use a smaller multiplier. MES and MNQ are one-tenth of ES and NQ. Micro Silver is one-fifth of the 5,000-ounce silver contract. Micro Bitcoin is 0.1 bitcoin, which is 1/50 of the 5-bitcoin contract. The calculator sizes each member of a family from its own tick size and tick value.

Should I include commission costs in my position size calculation?

Enter commission per side when you want it included. The calculator adds the round turn, two commissions, to the stop risk of each contract before it divides the budget.
