Prop firm position sizing with a trailing drawdown

How to size futures trades inside funded-account rules, so a normal losing streak never takes the account.

By Jordan C.Updated October 27, 2026Methodology

Proprietary trading firms (prop firms) give you capital to trade but enforce strict risk rules to protect their funds. Position sizing for prop accounts differs from personal trading because you must account for max drawdown limits, daily loss caps, and trailing/peak balance rules. This guide explains how to size correctly.

Two types of drawdown: static vs trailing

Static Drawdown (Easier)

Definition: Maximum loss measured from starting balance only.

Example: $100K account with $5K max drawdown (5%)

  • Starting balance: $100,000
  • Violation threshold: $95,000 (100K - 5K)
  • If you grow to $110K, violation threshold stays $95K
  • If you drop to $94,999, you violate and lose the account

Trailing Drawdown (Stricter)

Definition: Maximum loss measured from highest balance achieved (peak balance).

Example: $100K account with $5K trailing drawdown (5%)

  • Starting balance: $100,000 → Threshold: $95,000
  • Grow to $110,000 → New threshold: $105,000 (110K - 5K)
  • Drop to $104,999 → Violation (below new threshold)

Every new high water mark raises your violation floor. You can never be more than $5K below your peak.

Daily loss limits

Most prop firms also enforce a daily loss limit (DLL), typically $1,000-$2,500 per $100K account. This is measured from the day's starting balance to current balance.

Example: $100K account, $2K daily loss limit

  • Day starts: $103,000
  • Daily violation threshold: $101,000 (103K - 2K)
  • If you drop below $101,000 at any point, you violate
  • This resets the next trading day

Critical: Daily limits are often the first rule violated by aggressive traders.

Calculating a safe position size

Step 1: Determine Your Risk Budget

You must respect whichever limit is tighter:

  1. Distance to max drawdown violation (current balance - violation threshold)
  2. Distance to daily loss limit (today's starting balance - DLL threshold)

Worked Example

  • Account: $100K trailing drawdown ($5K max DD)
  • Peak balance achieved: $107,000
  • Current balance: $106,000
  • Today's starting balance: $106,000
  • Daily loss limit: $2,000

Limit #1: Trailing Drawdown

Violation threshold = $107K (peak) - $5K = $102,000

Available risk = $106K - $102K = $4,000

Limit #2: Daily Loss

Violation threshold = $106K - $2K = $104,000

Available risk = $106K - $104K = $2,000

Your risk budget is $2,000 (the tighter limit)

Step 2: Apply a Safety Buffer

Never risk the full distance to your limit. Leave at least 20-30% buffer for slippage, gap risk, and mental errors. If your calculated risk is $2,000, risk only $1,400-$1,600.

Step 3: Calculate Contracts

Use standard position sizing:

Contracts = ⌊ Risk Budget ÷ (Stop Distance × Point Value) ⌋

Worked example: NQ, $100K trailing account

You're trading NQ (E-mini Nasdaq) with the account state above:

  • Risk budget: $2,000 (before buffer)
  • Actual risk budget: $1,500 (25% buffer)
  • Stop loss: 20 points
  • NQ point value: $20
NQ, $100K trailing account
Risk budget after buffer$1,500
Stop20 points
NQ point value$20
Risk per contract$400
Contractsfloor(1500 / 400) = 3 NQ
Actual risk$1,200

Common Prop Firm Mistakes

1. Forgetting the Trailing Calculation

Many traders track distance from starting balance, not peak. If you're up $7K from start but only $1K from your peak, and your max DD is $5K trailing, you have $1K of room, not $7K.

2. Ignoring Daily Limits Early in the Day

Your daily loss limit is active from market open. If you take a $1,800 loss in the first 30 minutes and your DLL is $2,000, you have only $200 left for the entire day — even if you're well above your max DD threshold.

3. Scaling Up Too Fast After Wins

After a winning day that raises your peak, your trailing DD threshold moves up. If you don't adjust your risk per trade down, you can violate on a normal losing trade.

4. Trading Large Size Near Daily Limit

If you're $1,500 below your DLL and risk $1,400 on a trade, a gap or slippage event beyond your stop can blow the account instantly. Always buffer by 20-30%.

Scaling Micros for Prop Accounts

Small funded accounts ($25K-$50K) pair well with Micro E-mini contracts. With a $1,000 daily loss limit:

  • 1 ES with a 20-point stop = $1,000 risk (entire daily limit in one trade)
  • 10 MES with a 20-point stop = $1,000 risk, but you can scale out 5 contracts to cut risk in half mid-trade

The granularity lets you manage risk dynamically as the trade develops.

Tools for Prop Firm Sizing

Open the NQ example in the futures position size calculator. The hash is read in the browser, so the link does not add calculator query parameters. For trailing drawdown tracking, keep the peak balance and the distance to the floor next to the trade.

For automated enforcement, tools like Edge Trader Tools can calculate and apply prop-firm-safe position sizes directly in NinjaTrader based on your current account state and rules.
