Position Sizing in NinjaTrader: By Hand vs Automated

Should you calculate position sizes manually or let software do it? A practical comparison.

By Jordan C.Updated October 27, 2026Methodology

NinjaTrader doesn't include built-in position sizing tools beyond basic quantity entry. You can calculate manually, use a web calculator, or install an add-on to automate the process. This guide compares the approaches and shows when each makes sense.

Method 1: Manual Calculation

The Process

  1. Determine your risk budget (e.g., 1% of $50K = $500)
  2. Identify your stop distance in points (e.g., 10 points on ES)
  3. Calculate risk per contract: Stop × Point Value (10 × $50 = $500)
  4. Divide risk budget by risk per contract: $500 ÷ $500 = 1 contract
  5. Enter quantity manually in NinjaTrader order entry

Pros

  • No cost — uses only built-in NinjaTrader features
  • Full control and transparency
  • Teaches you the math, which builds intuition
  • Works across all platforms (not NinjaTrader-specific)

Cons

  • Slow — each trade requires recalculation
  • Error-prone under time pressure (market moving fast)
  • No automatic account state tracking (you must manually check balance, P&L, peak balance)
  • Doesn't adapt if your stop moves or account balance changes mid-day

Method 2: Web Calculator + Manual Entry

The Process

  1. Open a web calculator (like this one) in a browser
  2. Enter your account size, risk percentage, stop, instrument
  3. Copy the calculated contract quantity
  4. Switch to NinjaTrader and enter quantity
  5. Place order

Pros

  • Faster than manual math
  • Free and accessible from any device
  • Can save settings in browser (localStorage) for quick recalculation
  • Reduces arithmetic errors

Cons

  • Still requires switching between browser and trading platform
  • Manual data entry (account size, current balance) can be stale
  • No integration with live chart or order flow
  • Workflow breaks if you're trading multiple setups quickly

Method 3: Automated Add-On (e.g. Edge Trader Tools)

The Process

  1. Configure risk rules once (percentage per trade, max daily loss, prop firm rules if applicable)
  2. Click on chart where you want your entry
  3. Drag to set stop level
  4. Tool calculates contracts automatically based on current account state and live distance
  5. Order pre-fills with correct quantity; click to submit

Pros

  • Instant calculation — no mental math or app switching
  • Reads live account balance, open P&L, and peak balance from NinjaTrader connection
  • Adjusts automatically if you move your stop or account state changes
  • Can enforce prop firm rules (trailing drawdown, daily loss limits)
  • Reduces execution errors (wrong quantity, forgot to recalculate)
  • Faster execution — critical for scalping or fast markets

Cons

  • Costs money (typically $30-$100/month for position sizing tools)
  • Requires NinjaTrader 8 (doesn't work on other platforms)
  • Learning curve to configure rules correctly
  • Adds dependency on third-party software

When Manual Works Fine

If you trade 1-3 times per week, use the same stop size consistently, and trade a single instrument (e.g., always ES with a 10-point stop), manual calculation is fast enough. You already know your size without calculating.

Example: Simple System

$50K account, 1% risk, always 10-point stop on ES:

$500 risk ÷ $500/contract = Always 1 contract

No calculator needed until your account grows or your system changes.

When Web Calculators Make Sense

Use a web calculator like this one if:

  • You trade multiple instruments with different tick values
  • Your stops vary by setup (5-point vs 20-point depending on context)
  • You want to experiment with "what-if" scenarios before entering
  • You trade infrequently enough that the workflow delay doesn't hurt
  • You're learning position sizing and want to see the math step-by-step

When Automation Is Worth It

Automated tools shine when:

  • You trade frequently (daily or multiple times per day)
  • You trade multiple instruments or vary stops significantly
  • You're on a prop firm with strict rules (trailing DD, daily loss limits)
  • Speed matters — scalping, momentum trading, or trading fast-moving markets
  • Your account balance fluctuates intraday (you need live-updated sizing)
  • You've made sizing errors before (entered wrong quantity, miscalculated under pressure)

Cost-Benefit Example

Assume an automated tool costs $50/month. Is it worth it?

Scenario: One Sizing Error Per Month

You meant to trade 2 ES but accidentally entered 20 (typo in fast market).

Market moves 5 points against you before you notice.

Loss: 18 extra contracts × 5 points × $50 = $4,500 mistake

Even if this happens once per year, the tool pays for itself 10x over.

Time Savings

If manual sizing takes 30 seconds per trade and you trade 100 times/month:

  • Manual: 100 × 30 sec = 50 minutes/month
  • Automated: 100 × 2 sec = 3 minutes/month
  • Savings: 47 minutes/month (plus reduced mental load)

Hybrid Approach

Many traders use both:

  • Web calculator: for planning trades, testing scenarios, learning
  • Automated tool: for live execution when speed and accuracy matter

This gives you the best of both: education and verification from manual tools, plus speed and safety in live trading.

Try Before You Automate

Before paying for an add-on:

  1. Use this free futures position size calculator for a week. Track how often you use it and how long it takes.
  2. Note any errors you make (wrong quantity, forgot to recalculate, etc.)
  3. If you find yourself wishing it was faster or integrated into your chart, automation is worth trying.

Most NinjaTrader add-ons offer free trials — test them with simulated trading before committing.
